Veteran leg spinner Pravin Tambe has been disallowed from participating in the Indian Premier League for breaching the norms set by the Board of Control for Cricket in India. (BCCI) Supposedly, an Indian player can either feature in domestic T20 events across the globe or ply his trade in the IPL alone, which doesn’t turn out to be the case for Tambe, who rolled his arm over in the T10 league.
Pravin Tambe, one of the most unique narratives of success, determination and willingness to rise to the top, made his IPL debut without any considerable appearance in first-class cricket back in 2013 as a 41-year-old for the Rajasthan Royals. He was picked on the basis of a differential by Rahul Dravid himself. Since then, the old fox has scalped 28 wickets in 33 outings in India’s premier T20 festival.
In the recently concluded IPL auction, he became the oldest player to be snapped up after the Kolkata Knight Riders met his base price of ₹20 lakh. However, they are set to fall short of one player ahead of the tournament, as Tambe’s IPL future hangs by a thread.
KKR though, have a host of quality spinners that include the likes of Kuldeep Yadav, Sunil Narine, Varun Chakravarthy, and Aussie spinner Chris Green.
Substantiating the player’s misconduct, the BCCI functionary announced:
“BCCI rules strictly say that an Indian player has to be exclusively playing in the IPL or he has to stay away from the cash-rich league and participate in other leagues across the globe. To have sent in his name for the T10 draft and now to also be a part of the IPL is clearly against the BCCI protocol. So, he can’t play.”
The IPL is slated to commence on March 29 at the Wankhede Stadium, with the extravaganza set to go on till May 24.
