Former India Test opener Wasim Jaffer has revealed that he played a big part in honing the Bangladesh U-19 team prior to the start of the World Cup. According to the 41-year-old, the young crop of players who largely practiced under him at an age-group level has immense potential and pedigree to make it big.
The young Bangla Tigers clinched the U-19 World Cup from under India’s noses, pipping them by three wickets in a rain-truncated final against all odds. Young Akbar Ali, who had boldly affirmed that his side could go on to win the competition’s finals – a stage they had never even participated in before – did end up making a master prediction, after all.
Meanwhile, Jaffer, who holds the record for most runs in the Ranji Trophy, was appointed as the batting coach of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB)’s high-performance academy earlier last year.
Disclosing his contribution in Bangladesh’s triumph, as per The Telegraph, he said:
“Most of these guys have practised under me. They have been playing a lot of age-group cricket for a while. They have a lot of understanding among them. It’s a very talented group. Apart from Akbar, Shahadat Hossain was also with me. So was Prantik. I have seen most of them closely; they outplayed most of the teams. India were the favourites to win the final, but they outshone them too.”
Jaffer, who added that Bangladesh cricket is coming to its own, lavished praise on the U-19 skipper for his witty captaincy and leadership through example.
“He was very proactive while India were batting and led the team very well in this final. Akbar has also led Bangladesh’s U-14 and U-16 teams. He has, in fact, spent a lot of time captaining these teams. So with time, you do improve and the more you captain, the more you learn. His astuteness actually stood out.”
Jaffer, who was appointed as batting coach for KXIP in December 2019, is set to rejoin the BCB academy after the conclusion of the IPL.
