Lance Klusener, who has taken over as Afghanistan Head Coach in late September will consider improving the T20 cricket of the team.
Afghanistan, ranked 8 in ICC Men’s T20 ranking, is strongest in the shortest format. They had won the T20I series against West Indies after losing the 1st T20I in November 2019. They won the next T20Is of the 3-match series and thus won the series 2-1
However, with two T20 World-Cups coming up in 2020 and 2021, the South African all-rounder-turned-coach wants the team to take their T20 performances up a notch. And therefore, he plans to keenly observe the T20 nitty-gritty of the team to ensure success in both Asia Cup and 2020 WC in Australia.
Speaking of the form, as per the ICC stats, Afghanistan has not lost a series against any team since June 2017. And have won one series each against Zimbabwe, Bangladesh and West Indies. They have also beaten Ireland twice by a margin of 2-0 and 3-0 respectively.
As per the video posted by Afghanistan Cricket Board, Klusener says “We had a great comeback in the T20 series [against West Indies. Afghanistan’s strength is T20 cricket. The talent is there, it’s amazing, it’s young and fresh, but sometimes in big games against very good opposition, it’s about decision making and that has let us down a little bit.”
To start with, Afghanistan will have a 10-day camp in Dubai in January. The camp will focus on building an attacking game of the batsmen against pace especially pulls and cuts as well as help the batsmen play sweep against spinners. The camp will also focus on building partnerships of about 80 runs at-least in the T20 format and will also emphasize on fielding.
Klusener, however, was happy with the team that he felt has a good blend of youngsters and experience. According to him “Yes, there is always a need for having a good mix of experience and youth. Youngsters do frustrate you sometimes and that is where you need cool heads out there in the middle helping these young players to evolve.”
