Earlier yesterday, former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar questioned MS Dhoni’s absence from the international as well as the domestic circuit for so long, taking a dig at both the player and management. The commentator and pundit further addressed the fitness levels of the World Cup-winning mastermind, when underlining his chances of playing in the forthcoming T20 World Cup.
Dhoni, who was perhaps the heart of Indian cricket for over a decade, has seen his career strike rate drop since the beginning of 2019. He is not quite the finisher who would place cherries on top of cakes with aplomb, as seen in his latest ODI game – the semi-final against New Zealand. With 17,266 runs across versions of the game, Dhoni is widely considered as one of the greatest to have forged Indian cricket, if not the game itself.
However, his absence has not gone too well with the fans, as there’s been no clear indication as to when he wants to hang his boots or continue to make appearances in the shorter formats.
Gavaskar, often bold with his verdicts, highlighted the same while delivering the 26th Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial lecture. (via NDTV)
“Fitness is something that I can’t tell you anything at all. The question that needs to be asked is of MSD himself. He has not made himself available to play for India since the 10th of July.”
“That is the important question. Does anybody keep himself away from playing for India for that long? That is the question and therein lies the answer,” the legendary batsman placed forth.
Earlier, head coach Ravi Shastri had hinted, “I have had a conversation with MS and that is between us. He has finished his Test career, he may soon end his ODI career. In all probability, he will finish one-day cricket.”
At this stage, it’s difficult to state whether or not Dhoni would make the squad for the T20 World Cup, but a lot of eyes for sure will be on him during the course of the IPL.
