India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has interestingly lifted the lid on what led to him turning into a spinner, from initially plying his trade as a top-order batsman.
The Tamil Nadu-born supposedly saw his national side on the wrong side of the result once and believed he had what it would take to stop that drubbing.
Ashwin, who has woven magical spells with the ball throughout his career across all formats of the game, is known for writing his own fairy tale – a true ingredient of any match-winner. And it’s fair to say, the way he churned his dream into reality by becoming India’s strike off-spin bowler, is very inspiring and a matter of pride for his fans.
Ashwin made his international debut way back in 2010. And from then on he went on to become one of the greatest off-break bowlers of the modern era. The 33-year-old has 559 wickets in international cricket, with 357 of them coming in the longest version of the game at a healthy average of 25.44.
However, it is his sharp cricketing brain alongside a handy batting asset that sees him regarded as a world-class all-rounder. Ashwin has four Test centuries to his name within a total of 3,174 international runs.
Owing to his crisp timing, sound technique, and good temperament, the crafty off-spinner is more than just a bowler. Of course, he was a seasoned willow-wielder back in his day.

On the same note, while speaking to Mumbai Mirror, he revealed, “I was a batsman, I loved batting. One day, I saw India losing and I thought I can stop that and that’s how I became a bowler.”
Ashwin’s efforts with the bat were not celebrated much. But Ashwin’s journey with the ball and his trickery was largely admired by everyone.
He added, “In India, bowling is a less attractive trade, not a preferred trade. Luckily, people around me always allowed me to experiment with cricket.”
Ashwin, who hasn’t played an ODI since June 2017, also reckoned that he has come to a mature stage in his life, where he is always willing to express grit and compete.
India meanwhile, go head-to-head with the West Indies in the first of three T20Is tomorrow, at Hyderabad.
