India U-19 sensation Ravi Bishnoi’s parents were in disbelief after their son was found guilty of breach of the ICC Code of conduct for his misbehavior in the scuffle moments after Bangladesh won their first-ever Under-19 World Cup. According to the leg spinner’s father, young Bishnoi is one of his calmest children.
In what was their first-ever appearance in the U-19 World Cup final, the young Tigers prevailed over champions-elect India by beating them by three wickets in the end-to-end summit clash in Potchefstroom. Scenes inside the stadium turned rather ugly when the two parties involved themselves in a physical tussle, thereby breaking the laws and conduct of the game.
Following the bitter incident, five players were held guilty of a Level 3 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Support Personnel, for violating Article 2.21. Bishnoi exceeded the penalty limits, as he was also charged for breaching Article 2.5. He was ultimately sanctioned five suspension/demerit points.
The above articles correspond to acts that give rise to disrepute within the game, encompassing acts of misconduct, unruly public behavior, and inappropriate comments.
Mangilal Bishnoi, the guilty party’s father, reflected on the scenario, claiming, as per the site Mid-day:
“I wonder what happened to my son, because he is one of my calmest children. He explained the sequence of events and the circumstances when he lost his cool while trying to save his teammate, who was being attacked by the Bangladeshi players. My wife has not eaten anything since yesterday.”
Pradhyot Singh, one of Ravi’s coaches during his nascent years in cricket, also spoke in disbelief.
“I heard that the Bangladeshi bowlers started using abusive language. One of their bowlers also threw the ball at Divyansh Saxena and the way they went about celebrating every India wicket was not acceptable. The Indian players were also charged up but Ravi, who I know for 10 years, has always been calm and composed. He is a very obedient boy,” he asserted.
