Smriti Mandhana, the star batter of the Indian women’s cricket team, has shared her views on the pay gap between men and women cricketers. She made some valid points while talking about the topic.
She was talking in Mumbai at a promotion event related to the unveiling of the new range of shoes by Bata.
“We need to understand that the revenue which we get is through men’s cricket. The day women’s cricket starts getting revenue, I will be the first person to say that we need the same thing. But right now, we can’t say that” she told reporters, as per The Times of India website.
Male cricketers in the highest bracket are paid Rs 7 crore annually while female cricketers in the highest bracket are paid Rs 50 lakh for the period.
The left-hand opener further said, “I don’t think any of the teammates is thinking about this gap because the only focus right now is to win matches for India, get the crowd coming in, get the revenue. That is the thing which we are aiming for and if that happens all other things are going to fall in place.
“And for that, we need to perform. It is unfair on our part to say that we need same pay, it is not right. So I don’t think I want to comment on that gap,” she added.
Smriti Mandhana is a big and popular name in the women’s cricket. She was also the ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year 2018.
Indian women’s cricket team has a big goal in the coming month, in the form of ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2020 in Australia. India will start their World Cup campaign with the inaugural match of the mega event against the host Australians on 21st February 2020. India had lost in the semi-finals in the 2018 Women’s T20 World Cup.
But before the T20 World Cup, Team India will play a tri-series in Australia involving India, England, and Australia.
