Jasprit Bumrah, arguably the best bowler going around the cricketing circuit at present, has lifted the lid on the simple yet effective words MS Dhoni told him prior to his debut game for India. The fast bowler revealed that Dhoni asked him to express himself and enjoy the process of representing the nation for the first time.
Bumrah has risen to the pinnacle of fast bowling in recent years, developing from a lanky pacer with unfounded fundamentals to one of the most feared cricketers in the modern game. He has used the high raise of his magical non-bowling arm to great effect, ensuring skid and zip off the surface with his powerful load up to the crease.
Bumrah hardly sprints or keeps his arms intact, but generates impeccable bounce, pace, and late movement off the surface. Redefining the rules of what makes a fast bowler, Bumrah has, in fact, theorized his own game to many youngsters around the world.
The 26-year-old has 104 ODI wickets in just 64 appearances, to go with his 63 Test (in 13 matches) and 59 T20I scalps (in 50 matches). He came in as a replacement to the injured Bhuvneshwar Kumar back in the 2015-16 bilateral series against Australia and has ever since becoming the poster boy of Indian cricket with the ball.
Bumrah was groomed by the Mumbai Indians camp in the IPL, with the typical, lethal, Lasith Malinga school of thought. He is, therefore, one of the most complete pacers in the game across formats. Along with making the ball talk off the surface, Bumrah is consistent with his lines – in all phases of an innings.
Speaking to CricBuzz on their show ‘Spicy Pitch’, he mentioned that while no one came up to him, former India skipper Dhoni approached him and cooled his nerves down. Bumrah revealed:
“Nobody came up to me, nobody said anything, but MS came up and said just be yourself and enjoy.”
Jasprit Bumrah is yet to find form in the longest format since returning from injury, as witnessed in the first Test against New Zealand. He claimed just one wicket in the game as the hosts went on to snare a deserved 1-0 lead in the series. The Gujarat-based bowler and his side will look to salvage a draw in the series, with the second of two Tests slated to commence from February 29.
