Let us first see the squads for the T20I series.
Team India Squad for T20I series against Bangladesh
Opening batsman Rohit Sharma(Capt), Opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan, batsman KL Rahul, wicket-keeper batsman Sanju Samson, middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer, batsman Manish Pandey, wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant, off-spin bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar, left-arm spin bowler all-rounder Krunal Pandya, leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, leg-spinner Rahul Chahar, pacer Deepak Chahar, left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed, all-rounder Shivam Dube, pacer Shardul Thakur.
Rohit will lead Team India in the T20I series
As you can see in the list above, Rohit Sharma is the captain of Team India for the T20I series. Virat Kohli has been rested for this series. Like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma also has a very good track record as captain and has helped India win many matches in Kohli’s absence. So far Rohit Sharma had led India in 10 ODIs winning 8 of them and in 15 T20I winning 12 of them. Also, everyone knows he has won the IPL four times while captaining for Mumbai Indians.
With such impressive records, fans must be eager to see him captain during the Bangladesh series.
Ravindra Jadeja, Navdeep Saini, Kuldeep Yadav, Dinesh Karthik misses out
In spite of a string of great performances in all the three formats in recent times, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja could not find a place in the T20I squad for the series. Chief Selector MSK Prasad hinted that the team already has Krunal Pandya in the squad who plays a similar role in the team. However, it is good that Ravindra Jadeja gets some rest before the start of the Test series against Bangladesh.
Navdeep Saini was not included in the squad. Either he was injured or selectors decided to rotate the pace bowlers. So, they have included Shardul Thakur in the T20I squad instead. Similarly, Kuldeep Yadav who was exceptional in 2018 was not that effective in 2019, especially in the IPL. And thus again failed to win a place in the T20I squad. But he continues to be part of the Test squad.
Leg-spinner Rahul Chahar and pacer Deepak Chahar continue to be in the T20I squad. Both brothers were impressive in the IPL 2019. In the last T20I series against the West Indies, Rahul Chahar made his debut and played only one match taking 1 wicket in 3 overs giving 27 runs. Pacer Deepak Chahar has played four T20I matches so far taking 6 wickets at an average of 14.00 and an economy rate of 6.00.
Dinesh Karthik played well in the recently concluded Vijay Hazare Trophy. He scored quite consistently and also led the Tamil Nadu team to the final. However, in the final, they lost to Manish Pandey-led Karnataka. It is clear selectors are looking at only young wicket-keepers keeping in mind the T20 World Cup in 2020. So instead of Dinesh Karthik and Mahendra Singh Dhoni, we can see Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson in the squad.
Shivam Dube gets the Team India call-up
Right-arm medium pacer and left-handed batsman Shivam Dube gets to be part of the Team India for the first time. Shivam Dube played some exceptional knocks for India A against South Africa A and also impressed everyone with his six-hitting powers in the Vijay Hazare Trophy while playing for Mumbai. It will be interesting to see how this 6 feet tall all-rounder perform in the Team India colors.
India’s go-to all-rounder Hardik Pandya is not available for the squad selection. He is recovering from the back surgery he had in England in the first week of October 2019. Similarly, India’s ace pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah is recovering from the back stress fracture which he experienced just before the South Africa series.
Bangladesh Team Squad for the T20I Series
All-rounder Mahmudullah Riyad (capt), batsman Liton Das, all-rounder Soumya Sarkar, batsman Naim Sheikh, wicket-keeper batsman Mushfiqur Rahim, all-rounder Afif Hossain, all-rounder Mosaddek Hossain, all-rounder Aminul Islam Biplob, left-arm spinner Arafat Sunny, pacer Al-Amin Hossain, left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman, bowler Shafiul Islam, slow-left arm orthodox bowler Taijul Islam, left-arm pacer Abu Hider Rony, and wicket-keeper batsman Mohammad Mithun
33-year old left-arm spinner Arafat Sunny will be playing for the first time after the 2016 T20 World Cup. He was suspended at that time for illegal bowling action.
[Update: All-rounder and captain, Shakib Al Hasan is banned by ICC for two years (one year of which is suspended) from playing any form of cricket, as he did not disclose to the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) the full details of any approaches or invitations he received to engage in Corrupt Conduct. He was approached during Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Zimbabwe Tri-Series in January 2018 and/or the 2018 IPL by the corrupt people, but he did not disclose it then.
So now in his place, Mahmudullah Riyadh will captain the Bangladesh T20 side in the T20I series, while Mominul Haque will captain the Test side.]
Also, opening batsman, Tamim Iqbal will miss out on the series, as he has decided to stay back home with his pregnant wife.
Team India Squad for the Test Series
Batsman Virat Kohli (Capt), opening batsman Rohit Sharma, opening batsman Mayank Agarwal, batsman Cheteshwar Pujara, middle-order batsman Ajinkya Rahane, all-rounder Hanuma Vihari, wicket-keeper batsman Wriddhiman Saha, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin, left-arm chinaman Kuldeep Yadav, pacer Mohammed Shami, pacer Umesh Yadav, pacer Ishant Sharma, batsman Shubman Gill, wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant
There are no major changes to Team India’s Test squad. Shahbaz Nadeem had got the chance to play in the third Test against South Africa, in place of injured Kuldeep Yadav. But now that Kuldeep Yadav is fit again, he is not included in the squad.
Virat Kohli will be back from rest and will lead Team India in the Test series against Bangladesh. Team India has played 5 Tests so far as part of the ICC World Test Championship and has won all of them.
One reason that selectors have not experimented much with the Test squad is the ICC World Test Championship. Every Test match is important from that point of view and India would like to win both the Tests in the series and thereby gather 120 more points.
Bangladesh Team Squad for the Test Series
Middle-order batsman Mominul Haque (c), left-hand opener Shadman Islam, left-hand batsman Imrul Kayes, top-order batsman Saif Hasan, batsman Liton Das, wicket-keeper batsman Mushfiqur Rahim, all-rounder Mahmudullah, wicket-keeper batsman Mohammad Mithun, all-rounder Mossadek Hossain, all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraj, slow-left arm orthodox bowler Taijul Islam, Naeem Hasan, left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman, seamer Al Amin Hossain, medium-pacer Ebadot Hossain, and medium-pacer Abu Jayed Chowdhury Rahi.
