Former Pakistan all-rounder Abdul Razzaq has controversially called Indian sensation Jasprit Bumrah a ‘baby bowler’, also claiming that he could easily have dominated him.
According to the 40-year-old, since he had rubbed shoulders with some of the greatest bowlers in world cricket in the form of Glenn McGrath and Wasim Akram, facing Bumrah wouldn’t be that much of a daunting proposition.
Razzaq is widely heralded as one of the finest all-rounders to have played for Pakistan, if not across the cricketing horizons. Boasting 7,419 runs and an impressive 389 wickets in international cricket, Razzaq was a true match-winner on his day; someone who could turn a game on its head in a matter of moments.
Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah, against the odds of an unconventional bowling action and injury scares, has emerged as perhaps the best bowler in world cricket at present. At staggering averages of 19.2, 21.9 and 20.2 in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is respectively, the lanky speedster has amassed 216 wickets.
His nippy action, ability to extract additional pace and consistency in length has turned him into a feared commodity.

But Razzaq, who is known for his tendentious remarks, feels Bumrah isn’t as supreme as popularly regarded. As per Pakistan cricket, he stated, “I have played against great bowlers like Glenn McGrath and Wasim Akram, so Bumrah is a baby bowler in front of me and I could have easily dominated and attacked him.”
According to him, Bumrah has excelled and garnered recognition due to his unique run-up and bowling action. Razzaq added, “Bumrah is doing very well and has improved a lot. He has an awkward action and hits the seam perfectly, which is why he is effective”
Certainly so, because the Ahmedabad-born bowler does possess a tricky technique. But, his work ethic, coupled with unparalleled execution cannot be overlooked. The 25-year-old, who is working behind the scenes to get back to full fitness after sustaining an injury against West Indies, is poised for a return against New Zealand in the Test series scheduled in February 2020.
The Men in Blue meanwhile, take on West Indies in the first of the three-match T20 series on 6 December.
