Australia’s out-of-sorts batsman Matt Renshaw has opted to take an indefinite break from the game following his axing from Queensland Bulls’ squad ahead of the Sheffield Shield tournament. The youngster decided to push his professional side to the backseat owing to substandard first-class form on either side of the Big Bash League.
He has 636 runs to his credit from the 11 caps received in the longest format, with a career-high score of 184 against Pakistan. However, Renshaw has just 182 runs in his last 10 Sheffield Shield innings, managing just 36 as his best score in the same period. Three half-centuries in the BBL helped his run of form by a marginal extent, but a dodgy 26 off 117 balls against Western Australia in Perth last week resulted in him being dropped from the 12-man shortlist that includes marquee players in Usman Khawaja, Joe Burns and Marnus Labuschagne.
Not to mention, the likes of Bryce Street and Sam Heazlett have taken their game to the next dimension as well, meaning Renshaw will really have to fight his way through the competition to return to the top of the Queensland batting order amid what looks like an honest case of hamartia.
Renshaw, who has gone 31 games without scoring a century, also missed last week’s club cricket game for Toombul due to personal reasons. Amid all the tension surrounding his life both on and off the pitch, the Queensland management decided to grant a two-week rest to the talented opener.
The 23-year-old, having not featured for Australia since the UAE tour back in 2018, is set to prepare for Queensland’s next 2nd XI fixture against ACT/NSW Country, on February 24. With Labushagne and Khawaja set to miss out due to international duty, he could also receive a call-up back to the main Bulls squad.
The national team meanwhile, are readying themselves to face-off against South Africa in a three-match T20I series, starting from February 21.
