Former cricket stars Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist are ready with their teams to lock horns not for pride, not for entertainment and not for ego, but for the noble cause of helping Australia cope with the bushfires which have created havoc in some parts of Australia since the last 5 months. The bushfire bash (bushfire relief) match will be played on Sunday, February 09, 2020, at the Junction Oval ground in Melbourne.
The match was originally scheduled to be on Saturday afternoon in Sydney, but due to the high possibility of rain, it was moved from Sydney to Melbourne. This change has caused some players including the former cricketing great Shane Warne to miss playing the match.
Warne was supposed to lead one of the sides on Saturday. But now it will be Gilchrist who will be leading the side. Shane Warne is unavailable on Sunday as he has a prior commitment with Mandela Foundation in South Africa on Sunday morning and he could not fly back to Australia in time for the match. Still, he is hoping someone with a private jet will help him reach the match venue, but the chances of that happening seem rare.
He tweeted yesterday saying, “Very sad & disappointed to be missing Sunday’s cricket bash game. The reason being – I have an 8 am commitment for the Mandela foundation and a walk in Capetown on Tuesday morning at 8 am. No airlines can get me there in time. Happy to play if someone offers up there private plane?”
