Australian all-rounder Pat Cummins became the most expensive foreign player in the history of the Indian Premier League, as Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan’s IPL team, Kolkata Knight Riders snapped him up for a whopping ₹15.5 Cr (USD 2.2M). Following a tight tussle between Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore, KKR made a late entry to end the scrap with just their opening bid.
In the process, Cummins became the second most expensive player in the history of the IPL auction, after Yuvraj Singh, of course. After a turbulent start to his cricket career at the top level due to recurring injury setbacks, Cummins has romped to the very top of the ICC rankings for bowlers in Tests and also become a lynchpin in the limited-overs sides for the Aussies.
He recently became the first bowler to claim 50 scalps in Test cricket in 2019, while steaming in against Pakistan. Not to mention, the speedster finished the recently concluded Ashes series with 29 wickets.

The Allan Border medalist even took to Twitter to express his gratitude and excitement on joining the Kolkata project. Upon completing the sensational swoop, KKR coach Brendan McCullum delightfully said:
“He was the best player in the auction. We are delighted to have him. He has become very robust. He is the vice-captain of the Australian team and that shows he’s coming along well. We have spoken to him. When you go into the auction and bag the best player in the auction, it’s great.”
Adding on, KKR CEO Venky Mysore mentioned:
“We would have come in earlier but the paddles kept going up. We were certainly interested in him. We were determined to get him.”

The Australians in general, lit up the auction, with Glenn Maxwell returning to Kings XI Punjab for ₹10.75 Cr, Aaron Finch finding a new home in the form of RCB, Nathan Coulter-Nile fetching the big bucks off Mumbai Indians and Marcus Stoinis flourishing with a flurry to land himself at the capital for ₹4.80 Cr. Further, Josh Hazlewood, Chris Lynn, and Mitchell Marshall went for ₹2.00 Cr a piece.
Pat Cummins will make just under $10,000 per delivery in the IPL next year. No Big Bash contract this summer, but Cummins’ $3.1 million price will see him take home almost as much as two entire BBL franchises (36 players). #BBL09 #IPLauction

Most of the teams filled their respective voids and weak zones, but perhaps, none would be happier than the two-time champions and Cummins’ new team, KKR. Also, KKR gave another shock during the auction when they bought 48-year old right-arm leg-spinner Pravin Tambe who had last played for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2017.
