Nottinghamshire have signed Pakistani pace bowler Mohammad Abbas for County Championship 2020 season. He will be available for the first nine games of the season.
Of late this 29-year old pacer had some torrid time in the longest format. After getting dropped in the first test in Australia tour, he went wicketless in Adelaide Day/Night Test. Though he enjoyed his time in county cricket with his earlier team Leicestershire for two seasons.
Earlier Nottinghamshire had also signed Haseeb Hameed for 2 years after he was released by Lancashire.
Their head coach Peter Moores is quite happy with Abbas signing. In a press release by the county, he was quoted, “He’s a high-caliber player. He came into Test cricket late, but his impact at that level has been fantastic; almost unprecedented actually,” said Nottinghamshire Head Coach Peter Moores.
“We also know from what he’s done with Leicestershire that he can perform in English conditions and can excel within a county schedule that can be quite demanding on quick bowlers.
“He’ll strengthen our bowling considerably, as well as being a mentor for our younger bowlers who can learn a lot from the way he plays the game.”
In his debut county season in 2018, he set the stage on fire claiming 50 wickets in the season with an average of 17.72 which included 5 fifers.
Though he couldn’t replicate his success as much in next season with only 29 wickets in 9 matches.
Not just county cricket, he cherished English conditions in Test cricket as well. In Ireland and England, he took a total of 19 wickets with an average of 13.26 which included a ‘Man of The Match’ show at ‘Home of Cricket’ (Lords) as well.
Coincidently, Nottinghamshire will start their Championship campaign against his former team Leicestershire on April 12 at Trent Bridge. Last year it was Essex who had won the competition by beating Somerset in the final.
