The second season of the Mzansi Super League in South Africa i.e. MSL T20 2019 will take place in November-December 2019. In this article, we will see 2019 Mzansi Super League teams, marquee players, full squads and complete schedule.
The literal meaning of the word ‘Mzansi’ in the ‘Xhosa’ language is ‘south’ and it is also an informal name for South Africa. That is why the league is called Mzansi Super League.
The first season of the Mzansi Super League received a good response from the South African crowd, who enjoyed the fast-paced cricket matches in the league. There were some memorable performances throughout the tournament both from the experienced and the new players. This year also there is a good balance of experience and skills in all the teams. The tournament is scheduled from November 08 to December 16, 2019.
Thus MSL 2019 promises some quality cricket action for the South African cricket fans and for the overseas cricket fans. Let us now see the teams participating in the tournament.
2019 Mzansi Super League Teams
So there are six teams participating in the Mzansi Super League 2019. They are:
- Cape Town Blitz
- Jozi Stars
- Paarl Rocks
- Nelson Mandela Bay Giants
- Tshwane Spartans
- Durban Heat
Jozi Stars was the last year’s Mzansi Super League winner. The team was led by Dane Vilas, the South African player who now plays for the English County Lancashire under Kolpak ruling. However, this year, Dane will play for the Durban Heat team.
Cape Town Blitz, the table-toppers last year, were the runner ups in the MSL 2018. They lost to Jozi Stars in the final by 8 wickets with 15 balls remaining.
Marquee Players in Mzansi Super League 2019
There are two marquee players for each team. One South African marquee player and one overseas marquee player.
Andile Phehlukwayo, Faf du Plessis, Kagiso Rabada, Imran Tahir, AB de Villiers, and Quinton de Kock are the South African marquee players in MSL 2019.
Alex Hales, Tom Curran, and Jason Roy from England, Wahab Riaz from Pakistan, Isuru Udana from Sri Lanka, and Chris Gayle from West Indies are the overseas marquee players in the Mzansi Super League 2019.

2019 Mzansi Super League Squads of All Teams
Each squad of the Mzansi Super League 2019 will have a total of 16 members.
Out of the 16 members, two marquee players were pre-selected.
Then in the draft, 13 more players were selected by each team.
And finally, there was one wild card entry into each squad that happened later. The entry was based on the performances in the CSA Provincial T20 Cup, which is South Africa’s domestic T20 cricket tournament.

1. Cape Town Blitz Squad for MSL 2019
Marquee players:
South African wicket-keeper batsman Quinton de Kock, and Pakistani pacer Wahab Riaz.
13 players selected in the draft:

Wild Card entry based on CSA Provincial T20 Cup: Left-arm medium-pacer Kwezi Gumede.
South African former left-handed batsman, Ashwell Prince is the coach of the Cape Town Blitz team.
2. Jozi Stars Squad for MSL 2019
Marquee players:
South African seamer Kagiso Rabada, and the West Indian destructive opening batsman Chris Gayle.
Other 13 players:
South African batsman Rassie van der Dussen, South African batsman Reeza Hendricks, Australian all-rounder Dan Christian, South African batsman Temba Bavuma, South African all-rounder and captain of Vitality Blast 2019 winning team, Essex Eagles, Simon Harmer, South African wicket-keeper batsman Ryan Rickelton, South African slow left-arm spinner Aaron Phangiso, South African pacer Lizaad Williams, South African pacer Duanne Olivier, South African wicket-keeper batsman Sinethemba Qeshile, South African all-rounder Nono Pongolo, South African all-rounder Eathan Bosch, South African all-rounder Delano Potgieter.
[Update Oct 17] Jozi Stars signed up Pakistani all-rounder Shoaib Malik. He will take place of Chris Gayle, who will leave after playing his sixth game.
Wild card entry: Seamer Dane Paterson.
Wandile Gwavu, who had earlier acted as the assistant coach for the South African U19 team and Central Gauteng Lions cricket team, will be the coach for the Jozi Stars team in the Mzansi Super League 2019.
3. Paarl Rocks Squad for MSL 2019
Marquee players:
South African captain in World Cup 2019 and right-handed class batsman Faf du Plessis, and Sri Lankan all-rounder Isuru Udana.
Other 13 players :

South African veteran leg-spinner Imran Tahir, and the English batsmen Jason Roy.

6. Durban Heat Squad for MSL 2019

South African former left-handed opening batsman and former national team coach for India and South Africa, Gary Kirsten will coach the Durban Heat team in the MSL 2019.
Schedule for the 2019 Mzansi Super League
Mzansi Super League 2019 schedule is announced. The T20 cricket league tournament will begin on November 08, 2019. Last season’s MSL champions Jozi Stars will take on Cape Town Blitz in the inaugural match of MSL T20 2019. The match will take place at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.
The tournament final will take on December 16, 2019. December 17 is the reserve day in case needed.
Each team will play a total of 10 matches in the league stage.
Each team will play against each of the other five teams twice, once on the home ground and once away.
There will be only one playoff before the final. The second-placed team on the points table will play against the third-placed team in the play-off.
Finally, the winner of this match will play against the table-topper in the final on December 16, 2019.
